So mom wants to meet Matt, now. I think this is likely going to be a really good thing although it will cause Trevor a lot of temporary stress. Will he warn Matt first or just show up with her?

Seems natural that Trevor will warn Matt. Trevor won't want to have him caught off guard...

I'm looking forward to the inevitable comedy of Trevor and Matt dancing about pretending to be just dear chums, and Mum seeing right through it and asking something like "So when did you two start dating?" and getting stunned silence in response.

I really hope she's not homophobic like Trevor's Dad. Her being there is awkward enough.

Yeah, you're probably right. I think if he was going alone there's a chance he might try to surprise Matt but now that mom is coming, too, he is unlikely to come unannounced.

Based on her behaviors so far I would HIGHLY doubt she'd be homophobic. I guess she may say some insensitive things either due to ignorance or maybe just bluntness but I highly doubt she has a problem with their relationship a priori.

I agree with you Ben. I think mom is going to have a blast teasing her son about his "friend"

Because she's nice she therefore couldn't be homophobic? Dude. Plenty of nice people can be homophobic. Being seemingly nice doesn't take this away.

Who said anything about nice? I suspect she can really have a mean streak when she wants to.

Dude you said her behavior now. She's being nice. Now. Just because she seems good doesn't make her good.

This could go badly even if mom is totally gay friendly, because he lied to her. If Trevor were dating a woman, pretended this woman was a male friend/implied it, his mom would have just as much right to be miffed.

I don't really think it is- I do hope that they do the awkward "pretend not to be dating but mom totally knows" dance, and that this is the arc where Trevor starts finally truly accepting his sexuality. Matt really deserves a boyfriend who doesn't kneejerk deny their relationship exists.

No one is perfect- I've never met anyone that didn't have some dregs of internalized bigotry or some group that they hated/disrespected/whatever. Even the really activist minded types who dedicate their lives to fighting inequality- there's at least one group that they have no problem shitting on. A lot of times they'll pretend they aren't shitting on the group (even though they absolutely are), or they have some excuse about why [group] deserves their ire even though they acknowledge bigotry and discrimination against [other groups] is bad.

If your definition of a "Good person" is someone who has absolutely no bigoted ideas and never says anything offensive or insulting- you're either ignorant of your own internalized bigotry in certain areas or will be very hard pressed to find many good people.

My definition of a good person is someone who tries to not have these and unlearns toxic crap society tells them. Homophobes ain't good people. They never will be.

Maybe you could point out the point where he lied, because I totally missed it.

I look at what Trever said. "I want to go to London to see my friend. He asked if I could visit while he was there during spring break. .... I just really want to see him. He's very important to me."

Trever was pretty definite on the gender of the person. He certainly never implied Matt was a woman. Maybe I'm just not understanding what you're saying. But I'm definitely not understanding why you're saying it.

I didn't say what I said with the idea that no one could possibly ever act the way mom is acting and also be homophobic. I'm just talking in terms of story. If Starline is intending to have his mom be homophobic (and I'm not talking about the subconscious, only noticeable if you're looking for it type but rather the type that is blatant enough to make Trevor feel more "awkward" than he already is likely to feel) then I would expect Starline to show at least the slightest hint of it in these panels. She's clearly been portrayed as smart (probably a lot smarter than dad) and so it was probably immediately clear to her what Matt and Trevor's relationship really is. If she was the nice but homophobic type I could think of a lot of subtle ways Starline could allude to it. Even an "Oh...[pause] Well then..." before turning bright eyes and ordering the tickets would seem much more likely if that was the patch Starline was planning to take it.

But there was no hint of a pause, no split second furrowed brow, nothing. I just don't see this as one of those things that Starline would hold back on if this is where she ultimately intended to go. If anything, I think the way Starline played this particular strip along with the one before it suggests that mom has long sensed or knew Trevor had some attractions toward males and just let him figure it out and accept it in his own time. Mom knows what's going on. Why not show her homophobic reaction now? Why hold it in until she can blast it out later? Of course some people in real life might do exactly that. I just don't see Starline as likely to choose that path given the way she's handled it so far. And again, I can think of plenty of ways she might adjust this strip if she wanted to indicate that mom is both nice and homophobic. Starline can show a lot in a single expression.

Oh, goody. A storyline from "Three's Company" that could be resolved in a picosecond if people would simply talk to one another and ask for clarification on a statement. Trevor's Mom knows that she's meeting his boyfriend but he don't know what she knows and neither will Matt and hey, look, it's Don Knotts in a leisure suit.
This is the moment, the very instant, that we've all been waiting for/ No stupid gimmicks or Halloween tricks/ Let's get together and number our sores.
