Well I'm getting my first cat next month, and I would like any advice on training or preparing for a new cat in the home. I've only had dogs and rabbits before. I know they need a litter box lol and basic things, but what foods should I start him on and all that stuff. In links to sites with good resources would help to.

The place you are adopting your cat/kitten from should tell you which brand of cat/kitten food they are feeding said kitty. I would keep the kitty on that food for a while. You can choose to make your own cat food and there are several web sites out there for cooking food for your cat, but I find it just easier to buy a premium dry and wet cat food. Each cat is different and you may find certain flavors the cat prefers over others. Also you need to get a variety of toys for the kitty, a scratching post or two if kitty still has claws (which i hope the kitty does), and if the kitty likes to climb vertically you might want to pick up a cat climbing tree or condo.

I get a newsletter from petplace.com on cat which I find has some interesting tidbits. Since you have had other pets you might want to talk to your Vet and see what they suggest for food and stuff. If you don't have a vet, talk to your friends in the area that have pets and see who they recommend for a vet. And when you get your kitty, take him/her to the vet for a check up and introduction.

Sscat Cat is a good training device to keep the cat off or out of areas you don't want the cat in/on. http://www.animalbehaviorassociates.com ... ssscat.htm (Unfortunately my cat realized it was the can making the noise so if I take the can down, he starts climbing back on the counters.. grrr )

If your cat has claws and you don't want to declaw it but don't want scratched furniture, soft paws is a good alternative. Some vets and groomers will put them on your cat's claws for you. Just search around on the web for them.

Cats need food that contain proteins for their muscle build up. Whiskas is one of the best food that contain the nutrients our cats need. My cat Twinky also drinks milk before sleeping. This is her favorite time of the day.

My boyfriend just adopted a 5 yr old kitty from the Humane Society. His name is Seymour. I'm not a cat person, but this creature is so darn affectionate its hard not to like him.


He headbutts me a lot. And drools when he purrs.

My brother and I just adopted a 2 year old cat who is our miracle kitty. When he was put under to be neutered his heart stopped and he stopped breathing. Then he lost gross motor function and they were watching him over the weekend to see if he'd regain it, otherwise they'd put him to sleep. He regained that but lost his vision, and we adopted him anyways cause he was adorable and we loved him. A week or so after we adopted him he seemed to regain vision and now he's a normal kitty. He purrs really loudly and is really even tempered and loves us.

He is a cutie. And he is just showing you he loves you by the headbutts. I used to have a cat that did that alot. I miss him.

Our cat Sam is a major head butter. You have to watch him. If he does it to you when your teeth are slightly parted, he can make you bite your tongue. It's like being punched in the chin, but it's all good. It's tough love. lol

Hope you've got multiple undo on your graphics editor though, because you're going to need it now. Molly doesn't head-butt, but does try to get a scritch behind the ears when I'm typing [by trying to wedge her head under my hand -- while I'm typing]. Makes for some interesting typos. :-\

A very sedentary cat. Prefers laps to mattresses though.

And here's an old friend who, sadly, is no more. The rest of the site is somewhat crap, so I can't recommend it yet, but that particular page might amuse some.

That was amusing. And I like to say gone but not forgotten. The little furballs have a way of getting under the skin and staying there, whether they're around for just a few weeks or several years. We found a stray once that looked like she was about 2 months old but was closer to 6 months. The vet said she was probably born with feline leukemia, and it severely stunted her growth. She was suffering and unlikely to improve at all at that point, so we had to make the decision to go ahead and have her euthanized. Only had her a day, but I still think about her sometimes. An affectionate little tortie we named Belle.

True. It's almost two years since Cheetah died, but I miss her right now [probably after looking at that page again]. Molly is no replacement, but then she's not supposed to be; she's a completely different cat, with her own likes and dislikes. Actually, I can't imagine any two cats being more different and remaining in the same species.

Also true, but I'm sure you made her last day a good one.

I haven't volunteered at the SPCA for quite a while, mostly because I don't want to bring anything contagious home to Molly. She's not sick, but isn't exactly a health-nut either, and I can't play Russian roulette with her immune system. Maybe after she goes back to her people [I'm cat-sitting, have been for a few months now].
