$h!t $h!t $h!t, I hate this. Picked up a really good book the other day, and spent the next 24 hours reading it. And I'd already been up for a while before running some errands in town [where I noticed the book], so it was more like 30-something hours of uninterrupted consciousness. Yes I've slept since then, and the eyestrain has mostly faded to a dull throbbing around the temples, not exactly an ache any more.

Good books don't help me get to sleep, btw. Bad ones don't either, because I'll simply put them down unfinished. But a *really* good book will f*ck with my head relentlessly. I'm thinking of sending the author a fan-letter that begins `Thanks for the splitting headache.' [and then goes on to actually say some nice things about the story, of course]

Anyway, it's William Gibson's `Zero History'. Read at your own risk.

I'll most likely read this one again some time, at a more leisurely pace, but should probably just stick to movies for a while.

Cheers,

Patrick.

I'm currently reading The Sign of the Four, the second Sherlock Holmes novel. -Giddy-

I should really start reading Book 6 and 7 of the Harry Potter saga, but I've been so lazy and discouraged...

I recently finished Terrier by Tamora Pierce.

It's a coming of age/detective story set in a fantasy setting. It has the feel of Medieval Britain in some respects.

Managing the Fiscal Metropolis, very academic study of Chicago suburban cities. Up to date with all the issues of the past two years. Recommend.
Budda in the Attic, loved it until the last chapter. Um, I think there is more of a story that could have been completed. Well written, just leaves one wondering where the end to the book is.
Catherine the Great, reluctant to read because it was getting too much buzz. Now that I am far into it, the buzz is all worth it. Highly recommend.
Swamplandia. Love it. Have to read one of these very strange books a year. Real popcorn for the brain.

I'm reading a book called "Salt", which is all about the world's history based on how we used salt.

For instance, the Romans salted everything, the Ancient Egyptians buried people in it, and the Chinese were the first to use it in recorded history.

I'm currently juggling three books, one for pleasure, one for hobby and one for work.

For pleasure I'm reading Agatha Christie's _Evil Under the Sun_, because I find old-fashioned British mystery novels oddly soothing.

For hobby, I'm reading The National Trust Farmhouse Cookbook - yum!

And for work-related reading, I'm reading Joel Salatin's _Folks, This Ain't Normal - A Farmer's Advice for Happier Hens, Healthier People, and a Better World. It's an interesting read and covers a lot of topics, but especially keeps coming back to how disconnected we are as a society from the food we eat and how it's produced. While I don't agree with all of what he has to say, I'd recommend it to anyone who finds the topic at all interesting. It's engagingly written, as well.

I'm currently reading We Danced All Night: A Social History of Britain Between the Wars by Martin Pugh. It's research for a story I'm writing.

Started a great book this weekend: The Mist-Torn Witches by Barb Hendee. Part fantasy / part mystery it is a character driven story in a believable setting.
