He can be a good teacher if he wants to be.

I was thinking when he wants to be. :D Besides, Candi overheard him saying that she and her classmates were good students. She shouldn't have been surprised. I think Fitz is the type of teacher who plays mind games with his students to push them to be their best, like a coach of a sports team that subtly pushes the right buttons to inspire his players to get the best out of them. Years later, the player (or student in this case) will thank said coach for bringing the best out of them, particularly if they make it big in the sports world. Presently, though, the player/student might see them as a dirt bag they can't stand to be around.

It's probable that Fitz sees great potential in Candi, and plays with her mind to get the best out of her (and other students). We could be seeing a turning point on how Candi sees him...

Nicely put. Fitz remains one of my favorite characters. I had teachers like him in college and medical school. We worked our butts off for them, learned a lot, and never, never will forget them
There was a little girl who had a little curl
Right in the middle of her forehead,
When she was good, she was very, very good,
But when she was bad, she was horrid!

But it's still the present day so she still sees him as being something of an ogre. Realizing what he's up to is going to happen in any sort of epilogue or postscript to this story.
This is the moment, the very instant, that we've all been waiting for/ No stupid gimmicks or Halloween tricks/ Let's get together and number our sores.
