An understandable thing; she was already 'hard to get into the dating game' in the first place; then well as you said Alex and Linda soured the well. I think another bit is she's used to Chris teasing her so that might also be a reason to question motives.

Chris didn't do much to sweeten the water for the x amount of years they knew each other beforehand. His tendencies towards teasing, manwhoring, and propositioning would be enough for anyone to think he has ulterior motives, Alex/Linda aside.

Can't fully agree with that. The teasing might make her wonder, but if he was gonna proposition her, he'd just up and ask without the pretense. I think Chris is one of a few guys in Candi's life that she can trust not to play games like that. The others being Trevor and What's-His-Face, the author kid. Those two might play games, but not towards her.

I think Chris is one of a few guys in Candi's life that she can trust not to play games like that. The others being Trevor and What's-His-Face, the author kid. Those two might play games, but not towards her.

This accurately sums up panel 3, yes.

He got it for you because he thought you would like it and he's a pretty cool guy who doesn't afraid of anything!

Also because it's a perfectly valid excuse to initiate that hanging out she had agreed to do earlier. It's better to come with some sort of trivial pretense than nothing.

While Candi would be much less likely to betray someone, both of them have a natural distrust of everyone around them.

I think the key difference boils down to the reasons they both react this way. Candi's is because she was screwed over, firstly by her absentee father, then Linda/Alex (and no telling who else added to that can of worms). She reacts by putting up walls to protect herself from getting too close. Linda's is because she thinks everyone is out to get everyone else (like her former 'friend' from school), and it's 'screw over the other guy before he screws you'. And we all saw what she does.

We really don't know all THAT much about Linda's past to say precisely why she feels the way she does. I mean, knowing a few things doesn't really paint that much of a picture.

They also don't like the idea that they have all that much in common. Candi doesn't want to be thought of as being suspicious because it's not nice and Linda doesn't like being thought of as not really knowing much about the world.
