And I'm starting to get this REALLY bad feeling that Alex is going to try and get Candi back--while taking on Chris....

I have a feeling that Alex still thinks the world (and everyone he knows) revolves around him. He didn't want Candi to move on too fast after he broke up with her. He didn't like that Chris and Candi were interacting outside of a classroom - a class that they share. He literally accused Candi of seeking out a new romantic partner to get back at HIM months after they broke up. He had the audacity to come crying to Candi about Linda and casually considered asking her to be his side FWB (fully knowing her ideals/beliefs on casual sex). He could have easily told Candi his "I want to change majors but I'm afraid of Abuela's reaction" to her over the phone (or over text) but he insisted that she go meet with him for a meal (after she said she'd eaten).

It wouldn't surprise me at all if ALex thinks that buying her a hamburger and "pouring his heart out" will magically make her his girlfriend again. I hope a gigantic clue-by-four smacks him upside the head.

Preferably in the form of seeing Candi and Chris out on a romantic OR platonic date

The ball to the head incident is what Candi assumes is the reason for Alex hating Chris and Alex's response at the time clearly showed it bothered him and still does. But I suspect that it's not JUST that incident. If Chris was regularly being playfully obnoxious with Candi during their high school years (he did indicate when he threw her over his shoulder to carry her to class that he'd been doing that kind of thing in high school) then I could easily see Alex interpreting it (perhaps correctly) that it was flirting on the sly. If he was already dating her that could be plenty reason to dislike Chris.

If jealousy about Candi is Alex's reason for disliking Chris, his good humor about Chris contacting her and making her blush angrily (rather than the dark look that came over him last time they talked and Chris came up), its possible he really is trying to get over Candi, and having some success.

From my read of this, the reason Chris is "annoying" is because she is unable to reconcile her feelings for him with her belief in the type of person he is (and the defense mechanisms he has).
