Yeah, its going to suck if she throws a fit over this, but she didn't practically take care of you for a good chunk of your life and not at least care about you, or in Abuela's case, love you.

Suck it up, and do what you want to do and tell your grandmother. I honestly think Alex is just stalling for time because he doesn't want to confront his problem and deal with it, thus dragging Candi into this mess hoping she would be sympathetic to his plight (because he's an ass and always forgets she's not his shoulder to cry on constantly anymore) while Candi gives him the best advice she can think of, as it's not her problem. (Ha, kinda like what Jon did to Candi earlier).

I don't know, maybe he doesn't want Abuela rubbing in his face about how he needs to take back Candi, and he doesn't want to tell Candi that. I mean that's just a guess I'm throwing out there, given it's Alex it's entirely possible he really is this asinine.

Just because Abuela loves him doesn't mean the confrontation won't suck horribly. Or that it'll be over after the first argument. Abuela seems the type to nag and needle. I can imagine every conversation he has with her including something about how disappointed she is that he didn't become a doctor. If he has trouble finding a job (and who doesn't, these days?) she'd probly mention how he could have found a job and made lots of money as a doctor. Trouble finding a girl? Well the girls love doctors, you know. He's sick? Too bad he's not a doctor, he could take care of that himself. Et cetera, et cetera. Look at the last conversation Abuela had with Candi. She still expects Candi to take care of Alex, despite knowing they've broken up. I seriously think Abuela is very unused to not getting what she wants.

Yeah, I can see that. Still, Alex needs to think of what he wants to do, not what Abuela wants him to do. I'm not gonna say that it'll be easy for him, but its better that he tell her as soon as possible, rather than putting it off, I think.

I seriously doubt that Candi has ever had sex with anyone else or even viewed much porn to be able to compare. But even aside from that, I was mainly making my comment based on Laura's fleeting curiosity she showed when talking to Jon about Alex.

I agree with you on your impression of how Abuela might respond. That said, I still think it'll be better for Alex to just bite the bullet. I think he gets a lot of Abuela's needling anyway (just on other things, such as Linda) and he's learned over the years how to deal with that. But his conscience when hiding something is a very small but real positive thing about Alex. It's going to weigh on him the longer he keeps this from her. If her needling gets out of hand and he has to cut her out of his life it would be better for that to happen specifically after her needling got out of hand than how he's cutting her out now, with no explanation.

The one reasonable explanation for wanting to hold out on telling her is if she is going to cut him off financially. If that's the case, it might be smart to get all his ducks in a row, do a fast and thorough job hunt, explore financial aid options etc. before breaking the news. But even in that case, it'll likely really weigh on him the longer this extends because he'll know he's milking her money on false pretenses at that point.

If I were to advise Alex I think I'd ask him what it is he wants to change RIGHT NOW. Okay, you don't want to be a doctor. How does that decision impact the here and now. From what I gather from what Starline has described in the forums, it sounds like the pre-med program is similar to where I went to school. It's essentially like having a pre-med minor. It shapes a handful of classes he has to take but still allows the freedom to pursue whatever major he wants. So is his decision pertinent right now because of some class he wants to get out of? How many more pre-med classes does he have? Will they help at all with his major? It's quite possible that he may decide to keep taking those extra classes anyway. It may make him look a lot more appealing to anthropology grad programs. It also leaves a door open in case of any slight possibility that he may change his mind about medical school again. It might also soften the blow if/when he tells Abuela. "I'm still continuing on in the program we talked about when I first started. I just am not sure what I'm going to do after I complete this program." She'd probably still nag but it may give her time to adjust and likely reduce the chance that she'd cut funding. And honestly, I wouldn't put it past Alex to change his mind again about pre-med. I guess I'd like to ask a bit more about his decision and how he came about it and how long he's been thinking about it, etc.

If his real problem is that his premed classes are really hard or boring and he has a lot to go, then he may want to look for ways to make it easier/more interesting or he may really need to drop the premed portions altogether. My guess is that if he's in the middle of his junior year he probably already finished over half the pre-med requirements and only has a few extra classes left. It may be worth finishing those off anyway even if he decides not to go to medical school. I can't see the biology, anatomy, and chemistry classes as being totally unrelated to his anthropology interests. They will likely make him a better anthropologist.

Yea, I can really see this happening. No matter what he does, whether coming clean early or later, it's going to be a long haul. Would be interesting if he told her, then long silence on the other end of the phone and he learns later she had a non-lethal TIA or MI. She ups the ante then, saying she 'needs' him to be a doctor. Or hell, she just pretends to be sick to manipulate him into doing what she wants. I could totally see her doing something like that. Abuela is very used to getting her own way.
