There are people in the world, people who live in places that aren't America, for whom Family is more important than this. He is a wimp, but it's also entirely possible that just cutting Grandma off would cause problems with other members of his family.

On another note, Candi is such a good person. Some may say she'd be well within her rights to just unload an anger bomb on the guy and tell him to go somewhere uncomfortable. In my opinion, the fact that she's simply taking this conversation as it goes does her credit.

Honestly, I don't think that simply not telling Abuela is a very good option for Alex. I don't think he's very good at holding that kind of thing in. I think it will only prolong his suffering. He needs to just rip that band-aid off.

Alex cares about Abuela because she is the one who raised him after his mother abandoned him. Not sure what happened to his father. He can't just cut Abuela out of his life, she's all the family he has. Cutting her out isn't going to stop her from calling him. Any attempts at getting her to back off will just be met with Abuela's stubborn streak.

And I think, yes, she's one of the reasons he's so fubared, but she quite obviously adores her grandson (Candi's assessment is pretty close in that he is 'her little Cuban prince').

I don't think not telling Abuela is going to work. Alex does need to address this. If not now, at least he can call her and let her know he's okay. Maybe tell her he's been really busy or something if he's not quite ready to tell her he's more into being Indiana Jones than Marcus Welby, MD. But he really needs to just grow a pair, bite the bullet and fess up if he wants any peace any time soon.

I don't know, maybe he doesn't want Abuela rubbing in his face about how he needs to take back Candi, and he doesn't want to tell Candi that. I mean that's just a guess I'm throwing out there, given it's Alex it's entirely possible he really is this asinine.

In a way, I understand Alex. If you put yourself in his situation, he has a grandmother he cares about and he's worried about her and she's proud of him, being overly obessed in his well-being (in her f**up way) and she's also old and naive.
Breaking someone's heart, nomatter if it is a friend, girlfriend (has no problems there though) or familymember is harsh. He DOES overthink this, but yet I can understand with all the expectations that she's build up (and he) that its hard to bring the news. Though, Anthro-whatever he's into is still a genuine job. He shouldn't be worried.
But of course not so 'awesome' sounding as a doctor if you think about it, which i would dissagree with but that's just me. Indiana jones over a doctor anytime!.
But yeah, better make that decision quick Alex, or you'll go mental and your grandma will react even worse. If cutting your grandson out because of such a detail like changing his career-direction is a legit thing, then she's not worth it.

I may be misremembering, but didn't Alex mention that Abuela was the one supporting his college studies? I might be misremembering, though, but he did say she supported him when his parents didn't. If she's supporting him financially, then I can totally see why he'd care. If she's supporting him emotionally when his own parents won't, I can still see why that'd be important to him and not something he'd want to compromise.

I totally appreciate Candi wanting to get out of there and disentangle herself from Alex's life, but that wasn't great advice she offered. Not that she has any obligation to help him at all.

Ignoring how important family can be, there's also the yelling and arguments to consider. If Abuela thinks Alex is dunb, she'll yell at him. And if she thinks the school is bad, I wouldn't put it past her to come yell at someone there and at Alex for choosing it.

He can't simply tell the person paying for all of this that he's going to do something she doesn't want to pay for. She's got her cap set on his being an MD and she's jolly well not going to change horses in midstream just because it's killing him.

Without Abuela's financial support, Alex may need and actually qualify for subsidized housing (aka moving in with Trevor when Jon moves out). Finally, Laura will have her chance to nail Alex and figure out what all the hubbub is about. hahahahahahahaha
