At least he's not asking her to talk to Abuela (I didn't think he would really and the reasons he gave were exactly what I was expecting him to say). It may be he's hoping she will talk to Viola, and get it out there, even if by 'accident', but it may be he already knows he just needs to screw up the courage and tell Abuela himself.

To be fair, I think Abuela would do the same to anyone who told her the bad news. At the very least, she'd find some way of writing off whoever was telling her.

Alex is still an idiot. He doesn't seem to realize that he can simply not tell grandma. He could just let her keep her misimpression that he's going to be a doctor while he continues the studies he wants to do. And either way, this is a crappy excuse for neglecting the one relative who he claims he still cares about.
