This is why he doesn't want to talk to her. He wants to do what he wants but he also doesn't want to be pretty much disowned by a stubborn old idiot who wants to win all the time and has the power to do so.

Still not feeling much sympathy for him here.

I'm still suspicious that he's doing all of this to try and get Candi to face Abuella for him.

Of course he is. He's not going to man up and take his lumps for wanting a career that'll guarantee he'll be trying to upsell us on a Wal-Mart Mastercard.

Oh Alexander, it's not Candi's problem!
None of your issues were her problem since you left her.
Stop dragging her back, and get new friends.
....
Your grandma is not going to stop worrying about you and you are being selfish in avoiding the issue .

Yes, Alex! Get new friends who don't know what Abuela is like and won't understand why it means su much to you to make her happy.

Honestly, I do have some sympathy here. It's not easy going against family on something like this. I switched from education to history, and had to make this sort of call home. It was already nerve-wracking and I have a very supportive family. If Abuela is dead set against him dropping out of med, it's gonna be a hundred times worse for him.

Alex's stubble appears to have fallen out between the last strip and this one.

I have some sympathy for Alex here. Abuela has proven to be very spoiled/stubborn and contrary when someone isn't doing precisely what she wants. I suspect it's going to be a hard sell on his part to get her to see his point of view.

Candi would be a poor choice to call Abuela considering her command of Spanish is minimal at best. If Alex wants to get his point across and not have a lot of misunderstanding and argument he's going to have to bite the bullet and call her himself. Of course, he hasn't asked Candi to do it, and I suppose he always might, but really, it's something I think he knows he has to do himself. He just hasn't been up for it yet.

I am surprised he didn't discuss this with Viola. If he were to ask anyone else to try to tell Abuela, I should think he will ask her. She would be a better person to 'break the news' to Abuela than Candi would be since she seems to have a better understanding/grasp of Spanish and is older (closer to Abuela's age) and seems able to get Abuela to settle down and listen to reason. Perhaps he will be asking Candi to ask her mother to do it?

But he really should do it himself. Abuela may be hard to handle, but once she comes around (if she does) she would appreciate knowing he told her himself instead of using a middleman.

For sure. Alex doesn't do anything at random. Not that his reasons make any sense to normal people.

Heh, I know a brilliant, charming guy who got a degree in anthropology from a good college. He couldn't get a job in his field, and now runs a computer repair shop. You have to play the academic game to get one of those jobs.
There was a little girl who had a little curl
Right in the middle of her forehead,
When she was good, she was very, very good,
But when she was bad, she was horrid!

She should flip out, a doctorate in anthropology is a great way to rack up 100k in school bills and find yourself working a crappy low paying job.

I second this suggestion. Alex needs friends that aren't Candi. :P Maybe some people that can help slap some sense into him, as well.

And this is why I'm glad my own family never had any set goals for me or any of my siblings... my parents were generally very supportive of us pursuing our own talents. :)

You don't need to know Abuela personally to be supportive to Alex If he were to make new friends!
He didn't even try.
I am sure most people know about overbearing figure even if they don't have it in their immediate family.
