Talk about the comic

How do we know he didn't try? Are we seriously operating under the assumption that Alex is so inept, he can't or won't make new friends and has no friends other than Candi? Look, Alex shouldn't try dragging Candi back, but I don't think that's what he's doing. Abuela called Candi, Candi called him, and they're having lunch because it's lunch time and hey needed to talk. In this case, it's been a fairly logical progression of events. I somehow doubt Alex sat down one day, twirled his mustache, and wrote out a master plan to get back with Candi that starts with him not calling Abuela. That would just be ridiculous.

As for everyone having an overbearing figure, my family doesn't. I may not want to upset or disappoint them because I see them often, but they're not overbearing. Even if they were, why not cut that person out? In Alex's case, he can't. Abuela isn't just an overbearing figure in his family, she seems to be his entire family at this point. And if he does cut her out, she hunts him down, clearly. He's stuck between a rocm and a hard place and I don't think anyone that doesn't know Abuela would understand. Hell, I canall but guarantee the people on this board wouldn't understand if we hadn't seen Abuela in the past. If this was the first meeting with her, this board would be full of people decrying Alex for not calling his dear old grandma and how dare he be such a terrible person to his family.

Let's face it. At this point Alex could become become the most selfless humanitarian the world ha ever seen, and people on this board would still expect him to kick a puppy if he appeared in the same panel as one.

He didn't even try.

New friends like Katia?

Mostly because it's beyond his capacity.

As of yet, Candi still has the option of eating, walking away, reporting to her mother, and blocking Abuela's number. Though she better think about who would call her if something happened to her mother before doing the last one.

To be honest I saw Alex and Katia as Alex talking to a woman he slept with after flirting loads (nothing wrong with that, but I would not call Chris and jess friends either..same situation to me) , The same with Linda before they got together. What happened to his housemates? Fair enough Nate wouLd be not the best choice but Michael and Biana?

Or are you saying after yelling at Candi to be more independent and not be so clingy, Alex has got no one else to talk to about this?

People can change but I have not seen this in Alex yet to not expect him to use Candi when it suits him. Until I see change, I will think the worse.

As for some people not having an overbearing figure in their family, I don't either but we can still empathise with those that do and try to advise them (like we are doing now). Your ex doesn't need to be that person you run to for help though, especially how it ended between them.

We've seen him be a dick, so we're expecting that. We haven't exactly seen him do anything else than mostly being a dick. Unlike Linda, Alex shows no potential for changing in the near future.
Yes, I'm being a hypocrite. No, you should still calm down, it's valid.

Yep

Yeah, people can change, but not that much or that fast absent some truly life-altering experiences. We haven't seen Alick do anything in the least close to the "nice" category or the "selfless" end of the spectrum of possible behavior. Me, I cut Lure-a some slack after she went to bat for her little sister. (not enough to give her another name, though.) :P
There was a little girl who had a little curl
Right in the middle of her forehead,
When she was good, she was very, very good,
But when she was bad, she was horrid!

Alex is not the most selfless humanitarian the world ha[s] ever seen. He's a selfish asshole. That's what he's been for pretty much the entire comic's run. It is not an assumption that he has no (never mind "other") friends, for a value of "friends" that involves him acting like anyone but him really matters, and would need to rethink his life's central premise ("I am more important than anyone else and everyone knows it") to become able to make them; it's an observation.

That said, in light of his...previously established studying problems with his twelve units of significantly-easier-than-med-school classes...I think it's a very good idea for him to let go of the fantasy that he could get through med school, whether or not that's actually his reasoning here.
