Well, didn't see that one coming. But considering how little impact his emotional troubles caused with him, I guess it makes more sense. Considering how Abuela pinned all these hopes of her grandson becoming "A rich doctor like his grandfather" I can see why he's avoiding talking to her. She doesn't seem the type to be supportive of her grandson if his ambitions collide with hers. I hope he has some other thing picked out to study already, because calling her now with half assed ideas is just going to make it worse.

He was completely unsuitable to being a doctor, something, for whatever reasons he has reached the conclusion that he doesn't want to be, that is a good thing for all the patients who would have been under his dubious care. You have to have empathy and the ability to listen to your patients to be a good one. Something Alex is sorely lacking.

And good for Candi, holding to her guns and not letting him get away with his usual bullshit. I get the feeling he's going to swear her to secrecy though and this may drag out for a while as he sorts through what he does want to do with his life or find a way to tell Abuela he doesn't want to be a doctor.

Worst case scenario, Abuela browbeats him into going through with his studies and he becomes a miserable doctor, one who sucks at his job in addition to someone who doesn't want to do it.

Why do I get the feeling that what he's really trying to say is,
"I realized I'm just not smart enough to pass the classes to be a doctor."

I doubt Alex is self-aware enough to admit that to himself. I suspect it has more to do with this. Not only has Abuela been pressuring him to become a doctor, but it brings up the issues he has about being like his grandfather.

I guess given the topic of conversation in the comics, I can see how that'shis reason for not calling Abuela. But I rather, when I first read, assumed it was him trying to change the subject to something he'd rather talk about. Like, instead of calling Abuela, how about instead making Candi listen to him pour out his sorrows about how his life is changing.

But yeah, aside from that, I think the career choice and the additional realization that he might be more like his grandfather than he ever wants to admit (Liked sneaking around with Linda while still in a relationship with Candi, but didn't find it 'fun' anymore after he broke up with Candi.) Seriously Alex?

Hopefully this whole thing will be setting him on the right path.
