I'm beginning to wonder if there's a valid reason he's not calling Abuela. Like she's bugging him about something or other and just won't drop it.

Given the change in Alex's appearance, his mysterious demeanor, and unwillingness to talk to Abuela who literally told him that he should be an alpha male, "fucking girls and moving on", I have come up with an alternate, right-angles to reality hypothesis consistent with Alex's behavior.

In the intervening time since he was apparently lousy in bed with Katia, Alex has discovered that he is bisexual (at the least) and currently has a boyfriend on the down low.

Well, at least she will get a free meal from this and maybe talking to Candi will help Alex enough to where he can discuss it with Abuela and with any luck she'll leave Candi out of it beyond this one favor. Maybe talking face to face will be good for them considering the last conversation was him whining about Linda to her and Candi telling him to go soak his head.

Of course, considering this chapter has some weird interactions between characters (Jon and Jess' hook up, Katia and Linda/Thad) I hope this isn't some creepy interlude where she goes to talk to him, and after some weirdness, the next strip shows the two of them together in his room the next morning. God I hope not.

Maybe Alex has determined the best way to save the human race is to swear off all women, removing himself from the shallow end of the gene pool he's been swimming in, and move to Tibet to contemplate his navel and live a life of abstinence. He's meeting Candi to tell her where to forward his mail.

This right here is what has been in the back of my mind. He really wants to talk to someone who knows Abuela, and why he hasn't been calling. Until this strip it was just a suspicion (Based upon his evasions of everything and his rocking George Michael's old look). Granted this is just a suspicion - possibly even the longest shot out there short of his being an agent of the squirrel mafia tasked with drawing Candi into a trap.

And as far as Candi accepting goes - well when I was in college I was a dedicated Freegan. If it was free I would go and eat.

Eh, Candi's probably thinking practically. If she doesn't find out whats going on or convince Alex to contact Abuela himself, Abuela's going to keep nagging Candi about doing wifely duties like cooking him meals and shrugging it off when he's cheating on her. My guess is the next panel will be Alex going "HIIII CANDI <3 I MISS U" and her doing a face while going "Sit down, shut up, I want 12 hamburgers, you're gonna call grandma or I'm going to punch you"

With her saying "Your treat?" she's setting the terms of it - I don't think she's going to be suckered into metaphorically cradling big ol' baby Alex at all. Who knows, maybe this will push her to also take a relationship with Chris practically too, if it comes to it.

Now, see, when I think about it, I think Chris would turn down a relationship with Candi because he sees her as something akin to a sister-like person. If something about Chris makes Candi see him as more than just a friend, then I take her belief and apply it to Chris, which in turn makes him keep their relationship purely platonic. He really respects her. And that would probably devastate Candi so much, she'd run back into Alex's arms!!














Just funning everyone!! Man, I'm in a laughing mood today!!

I'm thinking they sit down and order their food, and Candi calls Abuela and hands her phone to Alex.

That look on her face. That look says "I'm going to regret this immediately and for the rest of my life." But at least she insisted on lunch. Not so much for the free food, because she's probably not hungry, but to signal she's not putting up with any crap.

That may backfire, though. He's paying, so he may think of this as a date. I don't know how anyone could be that stupid, but I'm not prepared to rule it out yet.

I can't tell if that look on his face in the last panel is him being gleefully surprised because he actually got Candi to agree to a 'date'...or if he's just putting on a face because it honestly didn't occur to him to make it his treat but he'll agree to anything to spend time with her.

I actually read a bit of desperation into Alex's tone. Sort of a "I really need to talk to someone who understands my grandmother and how stressful she can be." Candi fits. I think Alex is after a friend just now who can understand where he is coming from. Then again, I could be giving him to much credit.

I like that idea and think it's definitely possible. I agree that at this point this is about getting mom and Abuela off her back more than any concern for him. I really doubt he's going to use this as a way to try to get back together again. I also don't think there's anyway in hell she'd go for it even if he tried. That said, I'll admit to being a little worried now that when she hears out his reasoning she'll have some sympathy for his situation.

With every interaction with Alex, Candi seems to respect/like him less and less. I'm all for this meeting.
