Heh, as I was reading the latest comments, I was struck by the first time ( I know, I am slow) that all the "ranks" for this Forum are candy-themed: Gumball Boss, Chocolate Champion, etc. And for the first time it struck me, maybe Starline is not as indignant about Chris calling Our Heroine by candy-related nicknames as some here? I never have been, myself, I felt it was the kind of joshing close associates get into, mildly irritating one another. Maybe getting called "Doc" all the time has inured me.

Starline's the writer; Chris calls Candi what Starline decides Chris will call Candi. So obviously it doesn't make Starline indignant, or she'd change it.

However, it may be an echo something in Starline's past that did irritate her.

(But I think referring to Starline by the names of various interstellar-spacecraft-operating companies would be geeky to the point of hopeless obscurity.)

Now I have this crazy image in my head of Starline being greeted by Chris shouting "Nebula!", "HH Object!" or "Ort Cloud!"

Maybe I'm not following you. What do you mean by not giving in? There have only been a few interactions with Alex in quite some time, that I recall.

The big ones, in chronological order:

1) Alex tries to browbeat and manipulate her into making Laura and Trevor lay off Linda. She refuses.

2) Alex tries to tell her she can't hang out with Chris. She shuts him down.

3) Alex invades her study time and refuses to respect her wishes. She calls him on it and kicks him out.

4) Alex slut-shames Katia. So Candi calls him, reads him the riot act, and completely steamrolls his excuses.

5) Alex actually tries to proposition her during the open relationship mess. She cuts him off before he even says a full word.

6) Alex tries to get Candi to comfort him after Linda dumped him. She really gives him what-for.

Candi has gone through a very clear character arc over the past several real-time years. She's much more confident and firm in general, and even more so when it comes to Alex. She simply does not put up with his shit anymore. To insist that she definitely will have lunch with him over this, you need to ignore years of character development.

Okay, yeah. When Alex tries something beyond the pale she stops things right there. But on the flip side, when people have made an even quarter-way decent argument for why it won't be so bad she tends to give in even when she really doesn't want to. Letting Linda stay at her place stands out the most but then lots of littler things like, most recently, giving Alex a call.

I never meant that she would definitely have lunch with him. I felt pretty confident that, having started down this path to help his grandma reconnect with him, she would see it through somehow. Whether that be convince Alex to spit it out over the phone, or meet him some place some other time, or meet with him for a few minutes while he was eating lunch but not getting any herself. I had no clue how Starline would see it through, but I was sure that it wasn't going to end with Candi hanging up on him and the readers never finding out what happened to Alex. Especially since she's the one that made the initial phone call to him. SHE wants it over and done with so I think she'll follow through.

As for my "But she's going to regret..." comment you quoted earlier, perhaps I worded that a bit too definitively. It was part of the larger paragraph where I had earlier said, "My guess would be..."

And when I said regret I didn't mean it like she was going to rue the day she uttered that. It was more like when she's a little annoyed with Chris and she accidentally says something in a way that could totally have sexual innuendos. The moment he pretends she meant the sexual innuendo I always imagine her thinking, "ugh, should have saw that one coming." She knows Chris well enough to know he is going to go there. Same with Alex. I think she knows Alex well enough, that the moment he takes something she says as an opportunity to push harder she'll think in hindsight, "Ugh, I should have saw THAT coming." Yeah, she's already annoyed. It doesn't mean it won't annoy her more when he does more Typical Alex. Again, though, all this was simply my guess and I don't pretend to know Candi any better than anyone else here.
