Candi isn't going back to him, so don't even pretend to float that ship. Nor is Alex competent enough to come up with some ridiculous ruse.

My guess is that he's depressed due to some problem. He doesn't want to call his grandma until the problem is resolved (perhaps because she'll try to fix it in a way that Alex wouldn't like?). It could be slipping in grades, it could housing problems, money problems, etc. Maybe he knows that if he talks to her, she'll dig it out of him and he won't be able to lie to her. He wants to be able to say the truth but also include that it's been taken care of. That's my guess. I don't think the problem is that Linda is not with him anymore...but it could have started with that. For instance, his grades may have slipped after Linda dumped him because he got depressed and stopped going to his classes. I'm not convinced that Linda affected him that deeply but it's possible. Or he could have found out that she cheated on him with Nate and his pride was really hurt, causing a fight that got him kicked out or got him depressed that affected him in other ways. Who knows? I don't think this is some master plan on Alex's part to get back with Candi. I do think Candi may have some sympathy for his plight, though, and she may get sucked into his drama for a bit.

I don't buy that he has had some kind of epiphany. People who are oblivious to other people's sufferings tend not to "get better". (It's also the case that most sociopaths and people with Narcissist Personality Disorder tend not to "get better" — usually therapy just helps them become more adept at manipulating people. There are exceptions, but they are just that: exceptions.)

I bet Alex has just discovered that he can go and get drunk any time he wants, possibly with his jock buddies (he's an athlete, remember?), and keeping up with his studies and things are all the "drudgery" he can handle. He hates talking to his grandmother, and he knows Candi's mom will make him feel bad about his bad habits, so he has just convinced himself that it's okay not to talk to them "for a while".

(Or maybe he has joined a frat. I can totally see a jackass like him in a frat.)

That's true as far as it goes. But Alex's grandma would definitely take the opportunity to take the mickey out of him over hooking up with Linda in the first place. And Alex, of course, just hates it when he isn't given the respect he thinks he deserves. He also made some pretty strong objections the last time she tried to meddle in his love life, but she's clearly still set on him getting back with Candi regardless of how he feels about it. All of those are pretty solid reasons why he might be avoiding her.

They are. But I think that it's been quite awhile now since Linda has broke up with him. All the time that Linda stayed in the house and then out on her new job and into a new semester. If Alex hadn't been talking to his abuela all that time, she would have hit maximum panic mode long before now. On the whole, I think I have to agree with Rosebud on this one. None of the explanations so far make complete sense.

While the Squirrel Mafia have no reason to target Alex, they're cool enough that one doesn't care. And, really, he deserves it.

As to his grandmother wanting him back with Candi, I just get the sense that she feels that nobody is good enough for her grandson, which is why she was not thrilled with Candi when they were together. It's just that she is less awful than Linda and she is taken care of by Candi's mother, so, presumably, Candi will take care of him.
