Gonna play "Devil's Advocate" here and assume he feels closer to Candi than their elders (despite all the shit that happened--because he's so freaking clueless how much he's lost with her) and explaining things to Abuela or Viola would have been too difficult for him. He's alive. For now that's all Candi needs to know. If he doesn't call Abuela, then the next time she calls Candi checking up on him, she can at least impart, "He was alive when I called him and gave him your message. I'm done."

At least that's what I hope she will say.
