I can agree with you that Candi isn't exactly thick-skinned, but to claim that's the definitive reason why she and her mother are "alone" is... problematic, to say the least.

It's the kind of thing you hear from people who don't have a sense of boundaries and go too far too often. "Psh, it's not my fault, she couldn't take a joke."

I'm really hoping the Chris narrative moves forward. It's been building up for a looong time and it has crossed that threshold of needing to resolve one way or the other. Let this be the decisive moment where that happens!

That's a rather broad judgement call to make. My Grandmother on my Father's side got left by my Grandfather twice, and the 2nd time was enough so she focused solely on raising her kids (which in that era was damned hard given being divorced or a single mother put a nastier stigma on you than today). She did re-marry later, but MUCH later, and thankfully my Mother's step-father was a decent man if a bit dim-witted.

Thing is without a lot of info we can't say for sure if it's just a case of 'got burned, didn't bother to look again'. It could be a case of 'got a child, focus on them', and we don't know if Candi's Grandmother was left in the lurch, got divorced or her Grandfather died. Merely that her Grandmother was alone raising her Mom. Her Mother we know was sadly left by the douche-nozzle sperm donor, and probably opted to focus on raising her kid, perhaps even feeling she didn't need to worry about having someone since her own Mother was fine with it.

Or maybe it is a self-confidence issue after being burned? We just don't know. While Candi's recognized a pattern of loneliness, there's still variables to consider. Candi may yet break away from that cycle, especially since she seems to have picked up on it and while her progress has been minimalist; she does recognize her own mindset and stickler to said preconceptions are keeping her from moving on to another relationship which we've seen the signs that she'd like to have another one, but still has some issues to iron out. Which in a way makes sense both on the level of being badly burned by Alex after a three-year relationship, her own thick-headed, stubbornness in getting over her own self-admitted issues with dating.

Yeah, not agreeing with Candi and family being single because they're thin-skinned.

We really don't know a lot about why Candi's mom is single... not to mention that like anyone else who's been burned, Candi is being protective of herself, and that's a good thing. We all deserve the right to self-care and protection.

Alex is a douchecanoe. Chris tries to get her to laugh at herself when she turns into a pretentious clod. She thinks they're clones. Something is WRONG with that.

She doesn't think they're clones. She just thinks they're both annoying dudes. Which is a perfectly understandable and well-substantiated opinion to have: We have countless examples of her being annoyed by Alex and her being annoyed by Chris. She's not saying anything beyond the fact that they're both annoying dudes. Unless you're seeing another strip than the one I am.

I think the difference between the two is, Chris actually listens to Candi when she is having a bad time of it (as he did after the yoga class). Chris may be an annoying dude, but he's young still, just like most of the cast. He makes mistakes, and he can be cocky (what teenage boy isn't?), but he's already displayed more empathy in his role of 'supportive character' than I've seen in most teenage boys. Is there room for improvement? Of course, there is! And he seems open enough and mature enough to make it.

Up to now, the majority of his 'crimes' seems to be to poke fun at her name by calling her other things (like Skittles or Kit Kat)--ignoring her repeated protests. It feels more like something a grade school kid does to get attention. That he has always considered her a friend is quite evident by his treatment of her, which otherwise displays remarkable empathy (as the after yoga discussion and the double 'date' she went on with Katia, Thad and Chris shows) If it truly bothered her, she should sit him down, and calmly explain to him why it bothers her, beyond her grade school reaction of "stop that!"--which is the reaction he's going for and only adds fuel to the fire. And Candi gives as good as she gets too, we've seen this. Frankly, if they take this deeper than the relationship is now, as either friends or more, I can foresee either this discussion being had down the road or them laughing about it 20 years from now as one of those silly things that annoy a person, but end up being something humorous over time.

And if calling her Candi-nicknames bothered Candi to the extent she seems to display with Chris, why has she never just said "I want to go by my middle name"--a clear flag that would lead to that calm discussion considering Chris isn't an insensitive douchenozzle like Alex. I think secretly she likes the attention, just doesn't know how to deal with someone who isn't taking it out of grade school behavior.
