I think its a matter of Alex wanting attention from somewhere else - remember, Candi said "you should call your grandma instead of my mom" last time they hung out.

I'd totally forgotten about that. Although, maybe that whole encounter also suggests that grandma is negative enough even with Alex that he doesn't like to talk to her too often.

I had forgotten how much fun that storyline was. Went back and read some of the strips. While he seemed pretty upset when he called Candi, Alex does seem pretty unconcerned days later playing the video game with Nate.

From what I can tell, Abuela makes her displeasure known not just to Alex and Viola and anyone else sitting next to her, but has to make sure everyone else in the nearby vicinity/entire room is aware of it as well. Though he also finishes off that weekend with "That was fun" to which Candi looks at him like he has lobsters crawling out of his ears. Suggesting that some of Alex's obliviousness could have it's basis in Abuela's behavior.

Having it actively rubbed in his face (which I would expect she'd do, and press for him to go back to Candi) isn't something he would look forward to, so he's been avoiding calling. Or it could be he just got busy (as college kids tend to do--they just had finals) and got behind in his keeping in touch. I'm assuming he hasn't called Viola either since Abuela is calling Candi to check on him, which she never does.

I'm somewhat hoping Candi first calls her mom to see when the last time Alex called her since Alex calls Candi's mom more than his grandmother. The bonus to this approach is that Candi gets to talk to someone she actually likes talking with.

I'd favor Candi doing nothing whatsoever. "No, I've been too busy to try to track him down. I don't know when I'll have time. If I manage to get hold of him I'll pass the word on, but I can't say when that might happen or whether he'll actually call you."

Unfortunately, I seriously doubt Candi will do that. Sometimes she's too nice for her own good.

I think it's more of a "respect your elders" type of thing. She probably feels comfortable telling Alex to shape up and do what he needs to do to keep his grandma from harassing her but does not feel comfortable telling Abuela that she is not going to do what Abuela wants. In fact, this is why I don't think she's going to ignore Abuela or tell her she's too busy to do what she asks. It's much easier to make a quick phone call or swing by Alex's place than it is to try to talk Abuela into leaving her alone.

I guess if she shows up concerned about how he's doing, he may misinterpret it. But more likely, she'll show up irritated. I can't imagine him thinking that means she wants to rekindle the relationship. It's possible that she shows up irritated and switches to concerned IF he's really having a hard time (crying, deathly sick, etc.). I think even in that situation Alex is unlikely to misinterpret her, though.

I realized something about the Abuela character today.

I think I like her. I mean, as a person, she's all kinds of horrible, but as a character she's actually a kind of fun old firecracker to throw around. She definitely has a different energy than most of the other cast, and it made her original arc one of the more memorable ones. I'd love to see more Viola, too.

I love Abuela, too Even though she was a super jerk when she showed up, she just kind of reminded me of my own grandmothers (grumpy sometimes but really caring at the same time). And it's nice to have a character that is outside of the college-sandbox with which the main cast can interact. I do feel bad for Candi, though--must suck to still have ties to an ex even though it seems like Candi isn't interested in hanging around Alex anymore at all.

Don't underestimate the nincompoop's need to make everything about him. He's had his inner egomaniac cultivated all his life by that old bat and it shows.

This is what I fear will happen. She might agree to spend more time with him out of pity and I think it's already been said that this won't be good for Candi. For this, I want her to visit in person as much as I dread it.

Abuela appreciation week? Aye, she is a great addition to the cast. I love that she only speaks Spanish.

Yeah, I agree with you on that part. I don't expect Candi to do anything except pass on the message.
