Because who else goes to school with him that Abuela has the number for? Yeah, she should check with his parents first, but why not? People often call other people to find out about a third person even if that third person is not the second person's responsibility. In this case, Abuela probly just doesn't know that Candi limes Alex about as much as the pkague and treats him as such. Which, given that she probly doesn't talk to Candi much, isn't surprising.

I don't remember her ever using it in the comic before, but she was quite certain that Alex *would* be marrying Candi, the facts on the ground be damned. As far as I can tell, she basically considers Candi Alex's wife in everything but name, so it makes sense that she would talk to her like family.

Yeah. Also, while she may not have used "dearie" before I am pretty sure she has used other pet names/terms of affection for Candi before. I don't think it's the kind of thing where Candi would feel it out of place. e.g. "Huh, since when does she call me 'dearie'?" is not a thought bubble I'd expect to see from Candi at this point.

Thank you RDrd, clif, and PaulJones for including the translation. It's interesting that Abuelita still feels comfortable calling Candi, as many have said. It makes me wonder if Starline and Alex's Abuela kept in touch after their breakup.

To quote Babs Bunny, "Wake the kids and phone the neighbours; we have a WINNAH!!!!" Abuelita clearly thinks that since Candi is Alex's wife and thus keeps track of his comings and goings. Their opinion about that not being the case is quite simply irrelevant and immaterial.

We kinda had to because the artist forgets that not everyone knows Spanish or has the time to use Google Translate.

Ohhh, this is going to be good!

Well, mostly bad for Candi, but good for us as the reader.

Heck, this could also be another moment of growth for Candi as she cuts off even more ties to Alex and stands her ground against Abuella.

I generally don't translate when the characters being spoken to are having a hard time understanding as well.

If the characters understand each other, I'll change it to the purple text. Like here: Image

But if they are kinda in the middle and understand mostly, but not completely, like Candi does, I'll go back and forth between having the convo being in all Spanish or English depending on how complicated the conversation is. I essentially want the reader to feel the same frustration Candi does sometimes, where you kinda know what's being said, but still have to guess, because she isn't as fluent as she'd like to be.

The next comic will be translated because it is more of a longer conversation.

Maybe it's because she's asking for help...
At least her expression is honest.

Prestwick wrote:What does "Mijita" mean? I put it in Google Translate and it kept insisting that I was speaking Bosniak.

And as Abuela definitely doesn't come from Sarajevo, I'm pretty sure Google is wrong on this one so..help? :D

I think it's actually a contraction of mi hijita. Literally my little daughter, but more colloquially, honey, cutey, darling, dearest and the like. Coming from Abuela, it's probably almost like she said "Candi, sweetheart."

Hm. Perusing the internet, I even see it translated as sistergirl.

If there were exact one to one correspondences of words, translations between languages would probably be a lot simpler.

I kind of doubt there was any forgetting involved. Using Spanish is part of her character. Actually I see Starline responded already, but it's also not like there weren't multiple translations in the comments every time Spanish was used.

I'm not positive on this, but I got the impression that Alex doesn't have living parents, that Abuela is all he has.

He mentioned his mother like she was alive and with some other man than his father--I think. Not sure his dad was mentioned, though his grandfather was and I think his Abuela is a widow from the way it sounded. Abuela raised him as I think his mother pretty much abandoned him?

Abuela, and to a lesser extent Candi and Viola is all the 'family' Alex considers he has. And since the blow out, I'm not even sure he considers Candi/Viola as family anymore.

Candi should start making up absurd stories about Alex leaving town. And end them all the same: some version of "I don't care".

"Escuché un rumor de que abandonó la universidad y se unió a los talibanes, pero no sé si es verdad o no. No me importa."

("I heard a rumor that he dropped out of college and joined the Taliban, but I don't know if it's true or not. I don't care.")

"La historia es que él se trasladó a un planeta nombrado Jean y se casó con Lobo de Bowman. No me importa si es verdad."

("The story is that he moved to a planet named Jean and married a Bowman's Wolf. I don't care whether it's true.")

"Oh, tuvo una cirugía para cambiar su especie y voló a Yucatán para el invierno. Él y su nueva gallina esperar a tener un montón de pollos en un mes, y los pájaros de bebé tomar un montón de alimentación para que no tendrá mucho tiempo para llamarle. No estoy seguro de que creo esta historia, pero no me importa."

("Oh, he had surgery to change his species and flew to Yucatan for the winter. (Or Quebec for the summer, depending on when Candi tells this whopper.) He and his new hen expect to have a bunch of chicks in a month, and baby birds take a lot of feeding so he won't have much time to call you. I'm not sure I believe this story but I don't care.")

(Note: Google Translate. I have a grandchild older than I was the last time I studied Spanish. And that was for only one year.)

Eventually Abuela will figure out that calling Candi to ask about Alex accomplishes nothing. Since simply TELLING her seems to have had no effect.

It looks like a portmanteau for "my daughter", but it's interesting to find out that it's a Spanish term of endearment...
"If you truly love something, let it go. If it comes back to you, it's yours forever; if it doesn't, it never was to begin with." - An old proverb.

To add, I don't know if this would be true in Cuban culture, but for my family and most Mexicans I've interacted with, you basically get to call everyone at least a generation younger than you "Mija" or "Mijo," which directly translate as "my daughter" or "my son," but might also approximate to "kid," as in, "Kid, listen to me."

I don't think I've ever heard anyone use the word "Mijita," so I assume that's a cultural idiom.
